Wherever there are a group of professionals, an association is formed to update, discuss and disseminate professional knowledge, professional legislations; build professional comradeship, a forum to voice the views to the concerned authorities to bring about amendments for the welfare of the society and the concerned professionals and to socialize.
The ophthalmologists of Coimbatore, though a few in number, surely would have come together to share their views, experiences, and updates in ophthalmology.
It was in the year 1997 that Dr D Chandrasekhar, Assistant professor of ophthalmology, Coimbatore medical College, succeeded in bringing the ophthalmologists of Coimbatore together to form Coimbatore Ophthalmic Association. The association organized series of lectures delivered by eminent ophthalmologists, case discussions etc.
A year passed by, and the members decided to elect office bearers for the smooth functioning of the society. The ophthalmologists present unanimously suggested Dr. R. D. Ravindran to be the first President and Dr. V. Thangavelu to be the first Secretary in the year 1998.
COIMBATORE OPHTHALMIC ASSOCIATION was thus formed and Registered under societies act X of 1975, Registration no: 0106/2002(TN Act 27 of 1975), Office: 10, Kalidas road, Ramnagar, Coimbatore 641 009. Nine eye doctors as founder members of the association was formed. Dr. Parasuraman and Dr. R. D. Ravindran were instrumental in getting this organization registered. Most of the ophthalmologists were named as executive members of the association for the purpose of registration. A nominal fee was collected and registered as members of the association.
As years passed by, the association grew from strength to strength. But somewhere down the line, due to oversight or lack of supervision the returns were not filed to the registrar of societies and the association was debarred from further functioning.
Coimbatore district was allotted the TNOA annual conference in the year 2014 for which in the year 2013 a new association had to be formed and registered under the Registrar of societies as Coimbatore Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons (CSOS)
The Trust was incorporated on 11.12.2013 and registered with the IT department for PAN card and TAN card with GST number. In addition we have also obtained exemption from tax. Gurubatham & Associates had helped us in this regard and has ever since been the official auditors for the society, with the concurrence of the members at every AGM.
